Jim Burkitt completed a degree in Fine Arts at Wilfrid Laurier University (1991) in Waterloo, Ontario and continued his studies in Vancouver, graduating with a Master of Architecture degree from the University of British Columbia (1996).
Jim returned to Ontario in 1997 and established his career with G. Bruce Stratton Architects starting in 1997. Over a six-year period, Jim worked his way to the role of Associate and was the Project Designer for the Parkdale Branch Library, Deer Park Branch Library, Bayview Village Branch Library, Our Lady of Sorrows School and W. Ross Macdonald School for the Blind. Jim has expanded on his portfolio of civic related projects while at Maclennan Jaunkalns Miller Architects (MJMA) with work on such projects as the Aurora Recreation Complex and Dixie Sandalwood Recreation Complex.
Jim joined Gow Hastings Architects in 2007 to work with long-time colleagues Valerie Gow and Philip Hastings. While with GHA, Jim has overseen the completion of several projects including Durham College Centre for Food, Humber College Student Centre, Humber College Centre for Justice Leadership, Ryerson ServiceHub, and is currently overseeing the final stages of the repurposing of Macdonald Hall at the University of Guelph into the College of Business and Economics. With 21 years of institutional experience, Jim’s strengths are in design and construction, overseeing the coordination of drawing sets and working closely with contractors to ensure that the design intent is constructed.
