Description

The project involved renovating 1,500 square metres of existing classroom space in the East Wing of Conestoga College's Doon Campus to create specialized laboratories and support spaces specifically designed for the Health Sciences Bachelor of Applied Biotechnology (BAB) and Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) advanced diploma programs.

The design transformed formerly partitioned interior spaces into bright, light-filled research spaces. Carefully sequenced glazing created visibility into the laboratories and out to the exterior tree canopies connecting the labs to nature. These open and transparent connections revealed research areas previously conducted "behind closed doors."

Bold graphics are a key design feature, facilitating wayfinding and creating a sense of identity in a highly controlled, sterile environment. Vibrant greens are featured in lettering on the ground, spelling out "Biotechnology" and "Medical Science". These letters intuitively draw users from the corridor into the lab through passive wayfinding. The directionality of lighting and ceiling fans focuses on views of the woodlot.
Additionally, bold-coloured doors were strategically integrated to assist visitors in navigating the space effectively.

Canadian Biosafety Standard level 2 certified labs were designed for the development of physical containment areas with consideration for the handling and manipulation of human pathogens and toxins as required. The labs were carefully coordinated, providing a simple, clean, and safe space for research. In addition to the labs, a visually striking student hub and gathering space were established. The open student hub is well-lit with a custom illuminated solid-surface Corian column sign indicating the E-Wing.

The project extended to the second floor, where all existing classrooms underwent renovations. A chemical storage room and offices for faculty and staff were also added to support the program.

The successful completion of this renovation project significantly contributed to the advancement of Conestoga College's Doon Campus. The updated facilities provided cutting-edge spaces and curated labs specifically designed for the needs of the advanced health and life science programs. This renovation project further supported students in these programs and promoted excellence in education and research at Conestoga College.
