Description

Located next to the the Student Commons on the main floor of the Medical Sciences Building, the Lounge is a place where University of Toronto medical students can study, meet and unwind. The multi-functional space fulfills both their social and quiet meeting needs.

The existing Student Lounge in the Medical Science Building was inefficient inasmuch as it lacked a kitchen facility, access to natural light, comfortable and flexible furniture, and clear zones for eating, studying, lounging and other activities. We created a space that would enhance the student experience, with flexible furniture and elements so students could freely organize their space according to activity, such as meeting, dining, study and lounging areas, as well as an open area that could be used for other multipurpose activities, such as yoga classes and music practice.

The project also included a unique feature called a “looking glass”– equipment that would allow the medical students at the St. George Campus (downtown Toronto) to connect with the medical students at the Mississauga Campus.
We worked closely with an audio visual consultant to ensure the special “looking glass” feature was seamlessly integrated into the design of the space.

The timeline for this project was extremely tight with initial design beginning in March of 2014 and construction complete in September of the same year.
