Gow Hastings Honoured for Excellence in Wood Design

We are always excited by opportunities to push the creativity and sustainability of our designs by incorporating wood. Now, two of our projects have been honoured for excellence in wood design!

The Seneca College Odeyto Indigenous Centre, designed with Two Row Architect, is a recipient of the Citation Award from the Wood Design & Building Awards. A home away from home for FirstPeoples@Seneca, the design of Odeyto closely resembles the hull of an overturned canoe, supported by a ceiling of 28 glue laminated Douglas Fir ribs. The Douglas Fir was sustainably harvested from the Kootenay Region in British Columbia.

The Laurentian University Student Centre, designed with Yallowega Bélanger Salach Architecture, is a recipient of the Wood WORKS! Northern Ontario Design Award. The predominantly wood and metal building is designed to withstand the harsh winters of Northern Ontario and offers students an anchoring campus hearth, conceptualized as a warm and inviting living room. Wood is prominently visible throughout the building, running the length of the ceiling of the atrium and out to the underside of the large canopy, providing a callback to the surrounding boreal forest.

We’re honoured to be recognized for our work in wood design and construction.
